Ultherapy Skin Tightening Q&A

Skin Specialty Dermatology

What is Ultherapy®?

Ultherapy® is a noninvasive procedure that uses ultrasound to help tone and tighten the skin on the neck, under the chin, above the brows and on the decolletage. In fact, it's the only noninvasive technique cleared by the FDA to tighten and tone those areas.

How does Ultherapy® work?

Ultherapy® uses a handheld device to send sound waves into the deeper layers of the skin, the same layers that are tightened during a traditional facelift procedure. But while a facelift uses incisions and stitches to stretch the skin and hold it in place, Ultherapy® tightens and tones by promoting development of collagen, one of the essential building blocks of skin. The collagen matrix naturally provides support and resilience to skin, helping skin look firmer and more youthful.

What is the procedure like?

After cleansing your skin, a gel will be applied to your skin and the treatment applicator will be placed over the treatment location to obtain images of your skin that will guide treatment. Once the procedure begins, you may feel a tingling sensation as the energy is delivered to the deeper layers of your skin. The procedure takes about an hour to 90 minutes to perform, and because no sedation is required, you can return to your regular activities as soon as your procedure is complete.

What will I feel like afterward?

Once your procedure is complete, you may notice some slight redness, tenderness or swelling in the treatment area, all of which will resolve shortly after treatment.

How long will the results last?

Most patients experience some initial results very soon after the procedure, but optimal results can take several weeks to appear as your skin ramps up its production of collagen to help provide a new and stronger framework for greater support and firmness.
